IELTS General Module Writing Task one
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
A friend you met last year has invited you to visit them in their country. You have never been there before and need some information before you leave.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter
・ request advice about a gift for his/her family
・ ask about activities and clothing
・ find out about the food
You should write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write your own address. Begin your letter as follows:
Original:
Dear Piere,
Hello. Long time no see! Thank you very much for inviting me to your country, France.
I am sorry but I never been to France so I want your advice as follows.
Corrections:
Dear Pierre,
Hello. Long time no see! Thank you very much for inviting me to your country.
I’m sorry, but I have never been to France before, so I want your advice about some things.
Notes:
Your country and France are the same here, and you use the word France many times in your letter, so I don’t think you need it here. 2. You are
writing to a friend, so you should sound casual. I’m and I am are the same, but I’m sounds more casual and friendly. 3. Be careful. If you use the present
perfect tense (I have been) don’t forget the have. 4. Your advice as follows sounds very formal, so I changed it to about some things.
Original
I want to give you a gift to your family from Japan, but I don’t know what they like. Please let me know what they like from Japan? There are many things in Japan.
Corrections:
I want to give your family a present from Japan, but I don’t know what they like. Do they like traditional things, cute cartoon characters like Hello Kitty,
or would some kind of food be best?
Notes:
Gift is correct. However, for IELTS, you get better grades if you don’t use
the same vocabulary as in the question. Gift and present have the same meaning, but you could also say souvenir. 2. The 2nd and 3rd sentences basically say the same thing as your 1st sentence. You don’t use any new vocabulary and they wouldn’t be helpful for Pierre because he probably doesn’t know what gifts we can buy in Japan. I used some example presents, so the examiner can see that I know different vocabulary.
Original:
Next, I want to know about activities and clothes in your country. I plan to go to France in summer. Is it hot? What is temparature? What kind of activities is there?
Corrections:
Next, I want to know what kind of clothes I should bring. I plan to go to France in summer. Is it hot? What is the temperature? Do I need clothes for outdoor activities or do I need smart clothes for
going to restaurants and so on?
Notes:
The first sentence sounds like it was copied from the question, so I changed it a little. 2.
Asking about the temperature is good, but you don’t talk about any different
kinds of activities, so the examiner may think you don’t understand the meaning of the word.
Original:
Lastly, I want to know about the food in France. I like cheese and France bread, but I want to eat rice sometimes. Do you eat rice? Can I get rice at the supermarket? If the supermarket don’t have rice, I will take it with me.
I am looking forward to your reply.

Notes:
France is a noun, but you need an adjective, French bread, Japanese rice. 2. I you are using the same noun many times, it’s better to change it
to a pronoun about half the time, e.g. rice can be changed to it. 3. I don’t, you don’t, he/she/it doesn’t.
Comments:
You correctly chose to write a casual letter and you talk about all the points in the question. To improve your writing, I think you need to use different vocabulary. If you have already used a word twice, try to think of a different way to say the same thing.
I’m originally from Britain, but I’ve lived in Japan for about 5 years
now. I always have the problem of finding gifts for my friends and family
back home. I think last year I gave my mum a fan, but I don’t know if she
uses it. |
